Zia’s expands to Sac, Inspired Home to close

Davis’ best sandwiches will soon be available in downtown Sacramento. Zia’s Delicatessen owners plan to open a new deli as soon as this month. It’s on the ground floor of the State Education Building at 14th and O streets. The Davis store, at 616 Third St., opened in November 1995.

Kevin and Anne Marie Crilly cook their own meat and slice it to order. The new store will also sell Zia’s special salads, soups and to-go deli items sold by weight.

With 1,700 square feet, there is more room for seating (about 25 in Sacramento compared to just a few indoor seats in Davis). The menu will be the same, but the store design is sleeker, Kevin Crilly said.

“Depending on inspection schedules, we would like to open around Thanksgiving, which is the same time we opened our Davis delicatessen 18 years ago,” he said. “We are very excited to expand our little family business to Sacramento. Two of our children, Angela and Jonathan, who grew up in the Davis delicatessen, will be working the Sacramento location.”

The Davis deli recently added new signs, an Old World tiled entry and a mural painted by a Zia’s employee, Crilly said. In a nice tribute, the mural depicts the Tuscan village birthplace of Anne Marie’s father, who helped at Zia’s during its startup days.

It’s also expanded its Davis hours, adding Sundays. That store is now open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays, and noon to 4 p.m. on Sundays. The Sacramento store will be open Mondays through Saturdays.

Inspired Home, the new furniture showroom that opened in July, is closing its location at 5 p.m. Sunday. Owners Jennifer May and Nahid Shah are looking for a site with better visibility. The store, in a business park at 607 Pena Drive, Suite 400, was “enthusiastically received by nearly everyone who has walked through the doors,” May said.

The furniture, accessories and remaining items are being sold at steep discounts.

Whole Foods Market opened on Oct. 24. The new natural foods store fills the former Borders space at 500 First St. in Davis Commons.

Hours are 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. The nearly 20,000-square-foot store is roughly half the size of the large grocery stores in town, but 7,000 square feet bigger than Trader Joe’s. The Davis Food Co-op, celebrating its 40th year, is 25,000 square feet.

Whole Foods caters to those with easy access to downtown who seek a quick, healthy meal. In-house chefs prepare a large selection of grab-and-go foods. Specialties include soups, a salad bar and a burrito bar as well as sandwiches, pizzas and prepared meats.

Don’t expect to find diet Coke, Cheetos or Twinkies. The store sells only minimally processed foods that are free of hydrogenated fats, artificial flavors, colors, sweeteners and preservatives. It offers a wide variety of local products, and identifies them on the shelves.

Worried about the parking? Company officials say employees are not allowed to park in the lot behind the center. They’re also counting on lots of foot and bike traffic from employees and students from downtown and UC Davis.

South Davis Veterinary Center is settling into its new space in the El Macero shopping center on Mace Boulevard. It plans an open house on Saturday, Dec. 8, in the former Mountain Mike’s Pizza spot, which is larger.

Rivers to Reef, a full service aquarium store, opened on Oct. 19. Owners James Krause and Norm Ponferrada plan a formal grand opening event in November. The store is at 333 F St., Suite B – Spa Central’s home before it moved to E Street Plaza.

It features a 600-gallon freshwater tank in the main area, and 100 fish tanks in five rooms. Saltwater aquariums, which will fill one room, will emerge in the weeks ahead.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays; noon to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays; and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends.

“We open a little later (on Tuesdays and Thursdays) so that we can go to our wholesalers and hand-pick some of the fish we bring in to ensure quality,” Krause said.

Krause graduated in 2006 from UC Davis, where he earned a biology degree with a marine emphasis. His minor is in aquaculture. Ponferrada is a 2007 graduate in fish physiology.

International Bistro opened on Oct. 15 at 213 E St., Suite A, where Luigi’s recently closed. It features cuisine from all over the world, owner Maya Sherpa said.

“We are committed to serve the community with many good flavors from the East,” Sherpa said. “We are offering soups, salads, sandwiches (“nanwhiches”), and meals that have Eastern flavors – sauteed or fried. That means our foods have blends of ginger, garlic, onion and other Eastern spices.”

The basement floor will be available for private parties and entertainment, Sherpa said. Hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. It may expand hours to include breakfast in the future.

The McDonald’s Express at 640 W. Covell Blvd. closed on Oct. 25. The restaurant opened in June 1994. Davis’ other McDonald’s, at 4444 Chiles Road in South Davis, will remain open.

Cut Loose hair salon moved from its E Street Plaza spot at 211 F St., to 222 D St., changing its name to Cut Loose on the Move. Call 530-756-0422.

Taqueria El Burrito is still under construction in the former Great Wall of China II space at 223 F St., in the E Street Plaza.

The Mexican food restaurant is affiliated with two others in Natomas and Sacramento. The Davis store will be similar to the Natomas one, which features authentic Mexican food.

Work is still under way on El Toro Bravo Mexican Kitchen, in the former Baja Fresh spot at 237 D St.

The food will be a Mexican fusion style and is under the same ownership as Burgers & Brew and Crepeville.

It’s a similar story for University of Beer, a beer shop that will fill the corner space next to Panera Bread at 615 Third St., at F Street.
