Thanks to generous riders, media partners and members of the community, Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority’s “Fight Hunger One Stop at a Time” food drive once again reaped more than half a ton of food for Northern California food banks last month.
June 1-15, the CCJPA partnered with Amtrak to sponsor the most expansive summer food drive in California, a news release said. Nonperishable food items were accepted at staffed stations along the Capitol Corridor route. Of the seven Capitol Corridor/Amtrak stations that hosted bins, Sacramento yielded the most donations. Generous donors who used that station gave 680 of the 1,231 total pounds of food collected during the Fight Hunger One Stop at a Time campaign. In fact, donations in the smaller communities were up.
“Donations at Davis Station went up 49 percent, in Martinez 54 percent and in Emeryville we collected an amazing 207 percent more food compared to last year,” CCJPA Chairman Bob Franklin said in the release. “In addition, we collected 28 pounds of food in 10 minutes during a one-day passenger drop-off event in Auburn on June 6, which was coordinated by our loyal riders. We are grateful that so many people heeded our call to help fight hunger this summer. I urge the public to now fight hunger one click at a time. All of our food bank partners accept online financial donations.”

The Capitol Corridor serves 16 stations along the 170-mile rail corridor from Placer County to the Bay Area. An extensive, dedicated motorcoach network provides bus connections to the train. Together, these systems serve the second-largest urban service area in the western United States.
