Jack’s Urban Eats coming to The Marketplace

Jack’s Urban Eats is coming to The Marketplace in North Davis, hopefully by early spring, part owner Bobby Coyote confirms.

The California-themed eatery has locations in Midtown, Folsom, Natomas, Roseville and Sacramento International Airport. The concept is similar to Pluto’s but with a more varied menu that features sandwiches, salads, carved meats, chicken strips and fries.

The Davis restaurant will take part of the former Blockbuster video space in The Marketplace. Leslie’s Pool Supplies fills the remaining space. Coyote, owner of Dos Coyotes, said there are plans for an outdoor patio as well. For information on the chain, visit http://jacksurbaneats.com.

The sandwich shop Mr. Pickles is coming to Oakshade Town Center in South Davis. Owners Bonnie and Mickey Mann of Roseville hope to have it open by late August.

The eatery fills the spot last occupied by Davis Creamery, which now operates downtown as Sugar Daddies.

Mr. Pickles offers deli sandwiches on “San Francisco style breads.” Many of its specialties have classic meats and cheeses, with extras like avocado, cream cheese and bacon. There are hot or cold sandwiches; and green, potato, macaroni, chicken and tuna salads.

Two new stores share one space at 222 D St., Suite 9A: Bohème and Paulina’s. Bohème is a consignment store that sells “hip, used clothing.” Paulina’s sells “California casual clothing.” They opened Friday.

Dawn Donahue owns Bohème, and Paulina Jacobs-Sanders owns Paulina’s. Both women are Davis residents. The stores are next to Cloud Forest Café and The Mustard Seed, in Renew Denim’s old spot. The jeans store turned into a mobile boutique (think food truck).

Paulina’s features bathing suits — year-round — from brands like Sunsets (with custom size ranges), Luli Fama, Quintsoul, B.Swim and Vix. Boutique clothing lines will rotate with the seasons, Jacobs-Sanders said.

“I carry skirts, pants, dresses, blouses, jewelry and — in the near future — jeans and sweaters. I will also have a very good selection of holiday clothes.”

Donahue’s Bohème sells “gently worn women’s clothing at affordable prices. … Tanks, T-shirts, skirts, shorts, jeans, coats, dresses, purses (and) shoes.”

Brands include Abercrombie & Fitch, Aeropostale, American Eagle, Banana Republic, Calvin Klein, Gap, Guess, J.Crew, Inc., Lei, Levi’s, Loft, Lucky Brand, Rampage, Roxy, Tommy Hilfiger and True Religion. Customers may bring in their clean, gently used clothing for store credit.

Hours for the two-in-one store are 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.

Pure Beauty in The Marketplace will change hands and names as of Wednesday.

Davis resident Danielle Crane will take over the beauty supply store, but keep much of the inventory and (she hopes) all of the staff. The new store’s name is Sassafras Beauty.

It will close Monday and Tuesday to prep for Wednesday’s opening.

Crane, who has been an outside sales representative for beauty supply lines for many years, is excited about her plans.

“I really want the women in Davis not to have to drive to the Nordstrom makeup counter to get a makeover,” she said.

She’s also lined up an exclusive deal to sell bareMinerals makeup. She plans a grand opening in September to launch that product.

Berryessa Brewing Co. in Winters opened a tap room on Friday. It’s at 27260 Highway 128.

The brewery has been making and selling its stuff for more than a year. Its brews are on tap in Davis at Cafe Bernardo, The Davis Beer Shoppe, Village Pizza, Monticello Bistro and Kathmandu Kitchen.

On Friday, its staff served seven of its craft beers for the soft opening. Featured brews included a cask of Saisonic Saison, a summer ale made with local apricots. Tap room hours are limited for the first month or so: 3 to 8 p.m. Fridays, and noon to 6 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

On Thursday, I spoke with Rob Rasner, who does marketing for the brewery. He said they are shooting for a September grand opening, and expanding hours after that.

For information, call (530) 795-3526 or visit its Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/BerryessaBrewingCo.

The opening of VINI Wine Bar “went very well,” according to Janet Day, proud mother of its owner, Jeff Day. The long-anticipated jazz-themed wine bar opened July 15 at 611 Second St.

Jeff Day posted this on the VINI Facebook page on July 16: “(I) wanted to thank everyone that made our first day of business such a fantastic experience. The VINI Tasting Cards were quite a hit and guests took full advantage of the Enomatic wine serving system to taste our selection of amazing wines. It was great to see some familiar faces enjoying the atmosphere. Now that Day One is behind us, we’ll soon be announcing our first Winemaker Night and a schedule for Donal Smith’s wine tasting classes along with how to enroll. Cheers!”

Hours are 3 to 11 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays, 3 to midnight Fridays, noon to midnight Saturdays, and noon to 8 p.m. Sundays.
