UC Davis Store coming downtown

By March 24, 2011

You may have read that the university plans to open one of the largest downtown Davis retail stores “in quite some time” with its new UC Davis Store, coming this spring.

UCD has leased a 4,600-square-foot retail space on the southwest corner of Second and F streets, next to the Varsity Theatre. It will be a retail outlet for university products, “part of a wider effort to create a more seamless transition between the campus and the community,” a news release said.

The deal was an impressive demonstration of cooperation between city and UC Davis officials, and downtown merchants, real estate officials and property owners, according to Michael Bisch of Davis Commercial Properties. Jacquie Crabtree, owner of Strands Salon, agreed to move her business from the prized corner spot to another one within the building. Landlord Steve Boschken agreed to the remodeling. The Davis Redevelopment Agency provided financial help for façade improvements, and Davis’ Community Development Department facilitated. Davis Commercial Properties recruited the tenant and handled the lease.
