UC Davis Stores will host its second annual Smart Start event during move-in weekend, Sept. 21–22, at the main store in the Memorial Union building on campus. The event will be a free, fun and informative introduction to the academic year for new students and their families.
UC Davis Stores launched Smart Start last year to help new students find their course materials more easily and to introduce them to the nonprofit, independently run student store. The event features a personal shopping experience that pairs knowledgeable student store employees with incoming freshmen and transfer students to guide them through the textbook buying and renting process.
Incoming students can receive free, personalized help finding the textbooks on their course requirements lists, along with anything else they need for a successful start to their college careers.
In addition, students who bring the Smart Start postcard they received at the end of August can enter to win free textbooks for fall quarter.
In addition to providing general information about things like purchase requirements and returns, the student staff will explain the finer points of the textbook rental system, bookstore department manager Kato Meley said. Many incoming students don’t realize they can highlight and annotate rental books just like purchased ones, or that they can save up to 71 percent by renting instead of buying.
After they’ve found their course materials, students and parents can enjoy complimentary water and snacks, as well as tastings of popular campus-produced products such as UC Davis olive oil.
