The Davis Chorale, under the direction of Alison Skinner and accompanied on the piano by Ellen Deffner, will perform an interfaith vespers service at 5 p.m. Sunday, June 2, at Davis Community Church.

The service will feature choral music and congregational hymns, celebrating sacred music of different styles from various countries in different languages.

Austrian composer Joseph Haydn’s setting of the “Te Deum,” a text that has attracted scores of composers over the centuries, will be the longest work in the concert. Shorter works will represent the United States with the somber Funeral Anthem by William Billings, dubbed “America’s Father of Choral Music,” and the lively spiritual “Ride on King Jesus.”

“Der Jaeger” from Johannes Brahms’ Marienlieder represents the Romantic German element.

The haunting chords of Brahms later inspired Irish-born composer Charles Villiers Stanford. The choir will sing Stanford’s motet “Justorum animae,” written in the traditional Anglican style.

A small ensemble and a husband-and-wife duo will bring France and England into the mix with Gabriel Faure’s “Maria, Mater Gratiae” and Henry Purcell’s anthem “Sound the Trumpet.”

Admission is free, and all are welcome to attend. A free-will donation will be accepted with gratitude. For more information, visit www.davischorale.org.

“Snow Flower and the Secret Fan,” a 2011 Chinese-American film directed by Wayne Wang, will be screened Friday, June 7, as part of the International Film Series.

The series is co-sponsored by the United Nations Association of Davis and International House. Doors at I-House, 10 College Park, open at 7:30 p.m. and the film begins promptly at 8 p.m.

There is no charge, but donations are accepted with gratitude to help cover the cost of DVD rental, facilities use and refreshments.

The film is based on Lisa See’s novel set in 19th century Hunan that follows the lives of Lily and Snow Flower from the time they became laotong (“old sames”) as little girls. The laotong relationship continued independently of marriage, children or the changing fortunes of life, giving women someone to depend on in a world run by men who regarded women as property.

The tradition-laden story of Snow Flower (Gianna Jun) and Lily (Li Bingbing) is combined with a parallel present-day story set in Shanghai of best friends Sophia (Jun) and Nina (Li). The cinematography and costuming are beautiful. Additional actors include Hugh Jackman, Vivian Wu, Jiang Wu, Russell Wong and Hu Jingyun.
