It’s red, white and blue time for Davis!

With so many activities packed into the city of Davis’ Fourth of July celebration, residents will look forward to sitting back and watching the fireworks Wednesday evening.

“This is going to be a very exciting year,” said Carrie Dyer, a city of Davis community services supervisor. “The city is working with the Davis Live Music Collective to arrange a great lineup of music and entertainment, including a 90-minute set by Dave Alvin and the Guilty Ones, who will kick-start the fireworks show by singing his famous ‘Fourth of July’ song.

The Bard is back for summer productions

Start with moonlight, add an evening breeze, a picnic basket and a bottle of wine. Toss in an outdoor production of a Shakespeare play and you have the recipe for a perfect summer night.

It’s festival season, and there are many choices for theatergoers this year, nearby and farther afield.

Closest to home is the Davis Shakespeare Ensemble’s ambitious production of “Henry V,” which continues through Sunday, with performances today and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 6:30 p.m. in the gazebo at the UC Davis Arboretum.

This gutsy little presentation of one of Shakespeare’s most famous history plays features just five actors playing multiple lords, dukes and ordinary soldiers, as the action spreads from the royal courts of …

Three acts that have acquired a local following over the past 10 years — singer/songwriter Elvis Costello, author and humorist David Sedaris, and the acrobatic, visually imaginative Pilobolus Dance Theatre — will return to the Mondavi Center as “just added” events during the 2012-13 season.

Costello will present another intimate solo perform on Friday, Sept. 28, at 8 p.m. in Jackson Hall. Tickets are $35 to $65. His previous appearance at Mondavi was a well-attended solo show in April 2010.

Performances by this Rock and Roll Hall of Famer are prized by fans, with material ranging from new songs to hits spanning a career of 30-plus years, often including one or two songs from as far back as his 1977 debut album “My Aim Is True.”
