Despite Target, Davis shoppers still head downtown

When the city first proposed luring Target to Davis, many people worried the big-box store would harm local businesses, especially in the downtown core.

But au contraire.

According to a study by a research team from the Institute of Transportation Studies at UC Davis, the downtown has not seen a substantial reduction in shopping frequency since Target opened in 2009 on the east side of the city.

The researchers set out in 2009 on a “before-and-after” study that focused on vehicle miles of travel trends for Davis shoppers.
