Basketball playoffs continue without Lady Blue Devils

It was a valiant effort, given the tumultuous last half of the Davis High girls basketball season. But now that the Lady Blue Devils’ campaign is over — after they dropped a first-round decision, 65-51, to Pleasant Grove on Tuesday night at The Cage — an eight-team scramble for the Sac-Joaquin Section D-I title continues […]

The run is done. After winning 11 straight games — and going a perfect 10-0 in Delta Valley Conference play — the Davis High girls ran into a bad matchup in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section basketball playoffs. Pleasant Grove — featuring 6-foot-2 center Melissa Norman and brilliant sophomore guard Avonna Lee — […]

Heat burn Evans-less Kings

MIAMI — Potential trouble signs were everywhere for the Miami Heat. The first game back after the All-Star break. A bit of cross-country-travel fatigue for LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. Looming big-time matchups with the Chicago Bulls and new-look New York Knicks. Not a problem. James scored 31 points, Wade added 23 and the […]

DHS’ Hersch has a great set of cards

Dust falls to the floor as Dale Hersch peels open the faded wrapper of an old pack of baseball cards. He removes the stack, slides off the topmost card and turns it over — it’s a Randy Johnson rookie. While not an especially expensive or rare card, it’s another for his collection. Hersch, who lives […]
