Glass art: Make it or break it (literally)

The woman gently turns the spinning wheel and guides a fluff of fiber into yarn. While this would be an ordinary scene at a craft fair, here the venue is a Smithsonian museum and this spinning wheel is made of glass.

The Renwick Gallery, part of the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., is hosting a “40 under 40: Craft Futures” exhibit to celebrate the gallery’s 40th anniversary. Among the featured artists is Andy Paiko, 35, who grew up in Davis but now works in Portland, Ore. The exhibit opened July 20 and closes Feb. 3.

Watching his glass spinning wheel work for nearly nine hours during the opening days of the exhibit made Paiko a little nervous.
