Devayani Varma has the whole poster-making thing locked down.
The Harper Junior High seventh-grader learned over the summer that she won first place in California for her “Fight the Bite” poster in a national contest sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control. The contest encourages people to protect themselves from mosquito-borne illnesses by using DEET.
The year before, Varma was the national winner, taking home a $1,000 savings bond. A fifth-grader at Montgomery Elementary School at the time, Varma also took the grand prize that year in the city of Davis Street Smarts poster contest, which encourages kids to be safe on the roads. This year, she took third place.
She’s even had winning art included in the Yolo County water awareness calendar.
So it’s no surprise that Varma says she loves art. And this year, she’s excited to be able to focus on it even more now that she’s in junior high.
“I’m taking art for one of my courses this year so I’m very happy about that,” she said.
And she plans to keep on making posters, too, so expect those awards to keep on rolling in.
