Two Davis High School journalism students, Daniel Tutt and Anna Sturla, have been awarded a Robert F. Kennnedy Journalism award for their series on Latino issues published in the Davis High newspaper, the HUB.
The series included articles about the challenges faced by migrant students, the reasons why some Latinos prefer Spanish-speaking club sports, and an overview of the DHS Latino population. Tutt and Sturla traveled to Washington, D.C., last week to receive their award from Kerry Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy’s daughter.
They will bring back to Davis with them a bust of Robert F. Kennedy.
The awards were established in 1968 by a group of reporters who had covered Kennedy’s presidential campaign. They honor those who report on human rights, social justice and the power of individual action. While recipients are mostly working journalists, three awards are given each year to student-journlists as well.

Davis High School junior Ryan Hsu was awarded scholarships from the American Society for Microbiology and the University of Sciences in Philadelphia at this year’s Intel International Science & Engineering Fair.
The fair was held in Pittsburgh, from May 13-18, and featured 1,500 students from 70 countries. Hsu took third place at the Sacramento regional science fair earlier this year for his project, “DNA Based Identification of Airborne Fungal Population in Sacramento Area,” which examined what kind of fungal spores are present in the region’s air.
Classmate Benjamin Ju took second place at the regional fair and also participated in the international competition along with Hsu.
The fair’s organizing sponsors include the Intel Corporation, Professional Engineers in California Government, California Association of Professional Scientists and others.
