Rec Report: Help us get our thumbs up!

You made it! Congratulations! You either suffered or survived the annual holiday season with its ridiculous amounts of sales, get-togethers, friends and family from near and far. And the baked goods (stop with the toffee already!)

Anyway, I digress. Grandma Lottie’s rocky road will do that to you. But you know it’s the perfect time of year to get your act together. Whether you rung in the new year sipping the bubbly or eating something lentil-y or sleeping through the noisy neighbors, here you are. Welcome! 2014 is going to be epic and not because I wish it so, but because you can make it so in Davis.

It’s also that time of year when you make an intention or a resolution, about achieving something. Maybe it’s to stop nail biting, take up scuba diving, or not eat all the chocolate. Well, Davis Parks and Community Services decided months ago to get out from under the rock we were living under and make new friends. It’s a pretty simple resolution. We joined Facebook. Woo-hoo! Sound the alarm! Cue the confetti!

I know, I know. Yes, we are just getting to Facebook now. We have been so busy planning recreation and social opportunities and managing our extensive and well-taken-care of fields, greenbelts and parks to be social with anyone else. We were so committed to this plan, that we actually started before the new year rang in and rolled out our page in December. You should see our throwback photo from 2002, the last time it snowed in Davis. Go look… we’ll wait…awesome, right?

So here comes the shameless plug to “like” our city of Davis Parks and Community Services page. By the time you read this, we will be well past the 100-like mark and the cloud is the limit. We want you to like us. Really, really like us. We plan to do this by posting relevant information such as park closures/updates, important program enrollment information (such as when summer registration opens) or when the annual Teen Job Skills workshop will be (hint Jan. 29) or highlighting the many upcoming water conservation plans the parks crews have in the works.

We will also just post some fun stuff like infographics, Throwback Thursday stats and well, of course, some selfies. Hey, it’s FB, not a stuffy yearbook. You know us Parks and Rec people; it’s a lot of effort to improve the quality of life in town so we have to have a good time, too.

We want to get to know you. So talk with us. Say something witty on our page or share a great memory from one of your favorite park experiences. Share an idea for a program or provide feedback on something.

It doesn’t matter if it’s less than positive either. Real friendships are give and take, so we want to know how we can do it better. We want our status update to be: in an amazing recreationship with the citizens of Davis. We think once you like us, you’ll love us. So, get those thumbs up!
