* The Davis Food Co-op is accepting students for an “express” session of their Co-op Hands-On Work (CHOW) training, scheduled for Dec. 19-21, noon to 5 p.m. daily. This 15-hour program is designed to give teens aged 15-18 the skills needed to volunteer or work in almost any situation. The program includes customer service training, food and workplace safety, and job interview skills. The cost of the program is $50; need-based scholarships are available. Program is limited to 12 students. To enroll, the teen must come in person to the Co-op and talk to Julie Cross in the marketing office at 537 G St., Monday-Friday, from noon to 6 p.m.

* Tickets for the 2011 Davis Children’s Nutcracker go on sale in the Community Services Department, 23 Russell Blvd. at 8 a.m. Tickets are $9.50 for all performances. There are six performances in all, beginning Dec. 14 and continuing until Dec. 18. For more information, call (530) 757-5626.

* The Street Smarts poster contest awards ceremony and show opening is from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Davis Art Center, 1919 F St. Students throughout Davis submitted artwork for the annual contest and awards will be presented at 5:30 p.m. For more information, contact Street Smarts coordinator Rachel Hartsough at (530) 757-5640.
* The city of Davis hosts its semi-annual Battle of the Bands at the Brunelle Performance Hall, 315 W. 14th St., with doors opening at 7:30 p.m. and the show beginning at 8 p.m. Tickets for this all-ages event will be sold at the door for $6. * The Marguerite Montgomery Elementary School PTA will host their fourth annual Gift Mart from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the multipurpose room at the school, 1441 Danbury St. Among the items for sale are jewelry, art, hair and clothing accessories, holiday decorations, food gifts, and gifts for the home. Santa and Mrs.Claus are coming to visit with the children starting at 10:30 a.m. Parents are advised to bring their cameras. Milk and cookies will be available. Admission is free.
