Davis has a new slogan: “See bikes everywhere.*” I love biking, but I’ve added an important asterisk. There are some places I don’t want to see bikes.
I don’t want to see bikes coming at me when I’m walking on the sidewalk. I don’t want to see lightless-bikes suddenly emerging out of the darkness when I’m a pedestrian, a motorist or a fellow cyclist. And bikes are not appropriate or safe on freeways and certain key arterials, where alternate parallel bike routes are available.
Let’s be safe and practical. Keep the slogan, but add an asterisk.
