I am not directly involved with the current conflagration between the (former) school board member and the volleyball coach; however, I have spent hundreds of hours in the bleachers, watching both the Davis High boys and girls teams. I am appalled by this ongoing dispute.
My bleacher-sitting colleagues and I did not always agree with the choices made by our kids’ coaches. We all wanted to see our kids play more, have more time to grow and shine, build their confidence by spiking those balls, nailing those serves … but we knew that it was a team. Sometimes, the coach made choices that built the team by playing kids who supported others, even if they weren’t the most gifted athletes. Sometimes, the best players were held in reserve for extra power to drive in a win. Sometimes, our kids rode the bench.
Up in the bleachers, though, we all knew about teamwork: our support of the coach and the players was essential, even when we neither understood nor agreed with the decisions that were made.
This year has been a difficult one for DHS volleyball. Kudos to the players who have continued through this mess. Hopefully, the concept of teamwork will rule the court, the bleachers, and the board from this point forward.
