Every election year we are bombarded with media statements espousing the importance of our choices in the fall; the only absolute truth you will hear during a campaign season. Of consequence to our choice for school board trustee is how well our views will be represented throughout the term of the elected official.
Alan Fernandes understands that the successes of, and in, our public education system are made not only by the district, but are seen to fruition by every member of this community. Californians would be hard-pressed to find a community more emotionally and financially invested in its schools than Davis. In my experience as an executive board member of parent leader groups, I have not found a more engaged and dedicated husband, parent and public servant than Alan.
Alan and his family devote themselves to many local nonprofit agencies whose primary focus is upon improving the educational opportunities and access for exceptional, able-bodied and disabled children alike. His model behavior of service and outreach to children, teachers and administrators exemplifies the notion that the business of running a public school system should be that its leadership is dedicated to upholding our high academic standards rather than simply upholding the business of a business.
A school board member’s primary responsibility is to maintain and uphold the public’s investment and trust in the district. For our children, across the spectrum of early childhood to early adulthood, Alan’s gifts of intelligence and altruism would make him an ideal trustee. His willingness to take the long view, critically review issues and build a consensus is evident in his roles on parent leader groups, school site councils and superintendent advisory committees.
Every student’s future is dependent not only upon our choices in November, but on the choices that individuals like Alan will make beyond this election. As longtime Davis residents, parents of two school-aged children and to regrow and this town’s faith and support in our school system, my family will be voting for Alan Fernandes in November. Please join us!
