This letter is in response to Friday’s letter by Eli Davis. First, I would like to apologize to Davis for the way he was treated. I was appalled and deeply saddened by the situation he describes. I am embarrassed at my naivete. When speaking with friends about this letter, their response is that there is a lot of that attitude in Davis.

The Davis Police Department is in place to protect and serve all of this community (not just the whites), but apparently we have some officers on the force who are unaware of their roles, or did not take the “I am not prejudiced” oath.

There is no way this department can protect and serve if its officers are biased in an investigation, in apprehending a suspect or driving down the street, for crying out loud.

I would like to know if racism is the attitude of the Police Department from the top on down. Is this the type of training officers receive? What is the attitude toward lesbians and gays? Is harassment the norm? What century are we in? What country are we in? When will it end?

I am angry for the harassment and disrespect shown to Eli Davis. How will this officer be enlightened? Punishment will not change an attitude; he needs therapy (at his own expense).
Have you seen the movie “42”? Maybe we need to trade him to the Phillies.

I would like to see a formal apology to Eli Davis from the Davis Police Department.
