The Davis Senior Citizens Commission will have at least two vacancies to fill this fall. We encourage qualified applicants to apply; and those who have previously expressed interest to notify the city clerk of their desire to be reconsidered.
Our commission is an extremely proactive one, engaging in not only policy issues, but in projects as well. Commissioners can become as participatory and involved as personal time permits. The city is looking for applicants who may have expertise on mobility/transportation issues, senior housing, disability concerns, senior programs, etc.
Applicants need not be senior citizens. All that is required is a commitment to senior issues, and a willingness to search for solutions to problems the elderly face every day. Our commission has been keeping an eye on the development of Carlton Plaza Davis assisted living facility. It will be a welcome addition to the community and was strongly supported by the Davis Senior Citizens Commission.
A very promising senior transportation project is in the beginning stages. The commission hopes to foster implementation of a universal design ordinance for new residential development. We also wish to encourage a close relationship between our commission and the downtown business community.
The Davis Senior Citizens Commission occasionally holds meetings off site at local senior facilities, to find out what seniors in the community are thinking. The commission has liaisons to the Yolo County Commission on Aging and Adult Services, Unitrans Advisory Committee, Social Services Commission and Yolo County Focal Point Coordinating Council. And, of course, the Davis Senior Citizens Commission supports the ongoing programs and services taking place at the Davis Senior Center. An integral part of what we do is to provide educational materials on various topics distributed through the Senior Center.
It is not uncommon for the commission to hear citizen complaints, or take on controversial issues. It is all part of an extremely rewarding and collaborative process. The Davis Senior Citizens Commission meets the second Thursday of each month from 2:30 to 5 p.m. at the Davis Senior Center (no meetings in August or December). I encourage anyone who is interested to apply.
