Bicyclists, take the lead on safety
In recent times I find Davis people more and more often moved to anger over incidents where traffic brings car and bicycle together. What can those of us who use bicycles do to dissipate this emotional progress?
First: Model good behavior. We should make a point to fastidiously fulfill our obligations to traffic laws and customs. Recognize stop signs. Always signal a turn with an arm gesture. Politely acknowledge and wave to drivers who wait for you to pass before them. Use illumination when lighting is dim or dark.
Second: Don’t make things unnecessarily difficult. Avoid riding on busy roads when possible, such as Fifth, Covell or Eighth. Use a reasonable speed. Avoid left-hand turn lanes when possible. Keep a safe distance from moving cars. Wait for a comfortable gap in traffic when entering the roadway.
If we bicyclists of this city wish to avoid conflict and encourage safety, then we should begin by modeling good behavior and making it as easy as possible for drivers to respect us. We can and should lead in such a way as to earn respect from love rather than fear.
