Bike to School Day a success

By
From page A10 | May 23, 2013 |

Davis Street Smarts and Davis Bicycles! would like to thank city and Davis school district officials who greeted students on our second annual Bike to School Day, May 8. It was another big success; we counted 2,263 bikes in racks, which averages about 36 percent student-bicycling that day at Davis public schools.

Thanks to Joe Krovoza and Rochelle Swanson from the City Council; Sheila Allen, Nancy Peterson and Susan Lovenburg from the Board of Education; Winfred Roberson, schools superintendent and; David Kemp, the city’s active transportation coordinator. Sheila and Nancy did double duty, welcoming students at junior high and elementary schools.

Our thanks also to the gorillas and Tour de Cluck chickens who always make Bike to School Day an exciting event. It’s still May is Bike Month and the weather is great, so keep on biking!

Active4.me keeps statistics on CO2 saved for those who walk/bike and scan. Scanners saved more than 900 pounds of CO2 on Bike to School Day. Not everyone participates in Active4.me, so if the ratio of CO2 saved by Active4.me participants were extended to the bike rack count of 2,263 students and staff, Davis public schools saved close to 2 tons of CO2 on Bike to School Day!
