Both sides need to get serious

By
February 22, 2011 |

Lately I’ve been getting a lot of emails from various progressive organizations, up in arms about any reductions in Social Security benefits.   I have been writing them back saying that just as the Republicans need to consider tax raises, the Democrats need to compromise on benefits. I suggest reasonable compromises such as means-testing for benefits, which would protect those who need the support and reduce benefits for those who don’t.

Both sides need to get serious about reducing the deficit instead of the usual “untouchables” if we are going to solve this problem, and I suggest starting with the recommendations of the bipartisan group on debt reduction.  But don’t touch “Sesame Street”!    Laurie Friedman
