The Davis school board recently decided to hold a meeting to consider adjusting the school year calendar, and may decide to begin school five to 10 days earlier. They should be lauded for at least thinking about this idea.
Starting school a week or so earlier would cause the fall semester to end before winter break, which would mean that finals held on the last week before break actually would be the final, cumulative tests of the semester.
Currently, there are still several weeks after school resumes in January until the end of the semester, meaning teachers have to add in more topics and tests into those few weeks after students have already taken their finals.
I for one would certainly like the end of the semester to line up with the end of school and the end of the calendar year, and be able to begin anew after winter break.
The school board has the opportunity to make things cleaner and simpler for everyone; they should take it.
