My family has recently committed to reducing our waste, particularly the kind that ends up in the landfill. So I was excited to learn that the city is contemplating a move from the loose-in-the street collection method currently used to collect yard debris to a containerized program, allowing for the addition of food scraps.
The yard waste collected in Davis by Davis Waste Removal is sent to Northern Recycling Compost, a composting facility in Zamora. Moving to a containerized method would allow for the addition of not only food scraps to yard waste, but other compostable material as well, including coffee filters, greasy pizza boxes, paper cups and plates, paper bags, napkins, tissues and towels, paper take-out boxes and containers, tissues, waxy paper milk and juice cartons, cotton balls and cotton swabs, waxed cardboard and paper, and compostable plastic cutlery.
Food scraps comprise 25 percent of the residential waste our city sends to the landfill. Thus, a program that allows for food scrap collection will help my family, and the city of Davis, achieve our waste reduction goals.
