Dads like the library, too

By February 15, 2011

As transplants from the East Coast, one of the great things my family has loved about living in Davis for the past seven years is how much more progressive it is here in terms of celebrating diversity and avoiding unenlightened stereotypes. With that in mind, I was disappointed to see the title of yesterday’s headline article, “Kids and moms love the new library.” As a father and primary caretaker of a toddler, I can assure you that dads love the new library, too. While the article mentions that “a half-dozen moms, dads and their kids sat around the area, playing and reading,” the focus exclusively on moms in the title reminded me of the all too common gender role stereotyping in television commercials.
