Jose Granda and Tom Randall Jr., the official voices against Measure C in the county’s voter information pamphlet that came in the mail on Friday, perceive the use of tax money for our schools as “forced tuition in public schools.” On their website, they suggest that only people with children should be made to pay for public education.
What a splendid idea: Redefine the meaning of the word “public,” and save money! I think I’ll start opposing taxes that are used for maintaining “public” roads and parking lots for cars downtown, because I myself only use my bike there. How can these roads be “public,” if I never use them?
And the “public” library? Heck, just charge the people who walk through its doors $200 per use! Who says fire departments are a “public” service? My house was never on fire. Just charge those with fires $100,000 per visit!
And federal taxes for “public” safety? No terrorist ever bothered me or any of my relatives, so just leave me alone already. Thank you, Mr. Granda and Mr. Randall, for inspiring me, and for doing so without charging me a single dime.
I do trust you paid your share of the costs for the voter information pamphlet, no? Because I would surely hate to see my taxes being used to fund free publication space for people I don’t know and don’t agree with.
