Everything’s business to Mitt

By From page A4 | October 30, 2012

Mitt Romney’s “binders full of women” statement is getting more play than it deserves. Yes, it’s a clumsy statement that is getting a lot of laughs on the Internet and Comedy Central. But, it resonates deeper with me: I think the statement sheds light on Romney’s insensitivity and lack of diplomacy.

So what if he has binders of women? He probably has binders of men, binders of workers in Ohio and workers in China. He has information about where to get the best deals. However, Romney sees most of us as commodities in a catalog, rather than flesh and blood; he can enjoy tax savings and cheap labor in China, without regard for the consequences on his homeland.

With his “binders full of women” he got affirmative action credits in Massachusetts and a good business deal. Hiring women resulted in his obtaining workers equal to, or better than the available men, for (probably) lower cost. The reality is everything is business to Romney.
