Expand community garden areas

By From page A6 | January 29, 2014

I would like to see the city of Davis expand the availability of community gardens, which promote health and community.
The gardeners benefit from the wholesome food they produce as well as from the good physical exercise they get. I believe gardening promotes mental health due to stress relief benefits as well.
The gardens promote community as well, as neighbors get to meet each other and share gardening tips and surplus produce.
I have seen several sites that would be suitable to convert for this purpose, including lots at the north end of J Street, the west end of Chiles Road and next to F Street near Northstar Pond. And of course, the cannery site should include community gardens.
I am sure there are more suitable sites.
The owners of these properties, in the meantime, are just losing money maintaining them. Converting a lot to gardens would not be a large investment, and a moderate fee would result in substantial profits and a reduction in maintenance costs.
We are known as a bike city. We could also be known as a “community gardens” city!
