One week ago, our garage and its contents were destroyed by an electrical fire. My wife and I and our dog, Charley, all escaped without injury. The Davis Fire Department was exemplary and was able to save the contents of our home.
State Farm, our home insurer, already has us in a furnished home while ours undergoes extensive repairs. State Farm’s response to our crisis has been so amazing that I find myself praising them to those who ask and many who don’t!
As the article in this paper pointed out the day after the fire, several classic cars were in the garage and were badly damaged. The 1959 Austin Healey (bugeye) Sprite and my wife’s beloved 1959 Morris Minor Traveller woody will likely both be “totaled.” My little green 1959 Morris flatbed truck was in the driveway and suffered only paint damage that will be soon repaired.
To those of you who have seen the cars around Davis and those who have asked about their fate, I assure you that I will eventually rebuild both of them to their former state and they will once again cruise the streets and attend Davis’ Cruise-In.
I first worked on the Sprite in 1969. A little thing like “total” destruction is just another bump in the life of a 53 year-old car.
Again, special thanks to the Davis Fire Department, State Farm Insurance and the many friends whose offers of concern and assistance helped us through the first few darkest days after the fire.
