Hirschfield trial coverage praised

The undersigned and many others are exceedingly grateful to The Davis Enterprise for the excellent, reliable coverage of the tragic murders of John Riggins and Sabrina Gonsalves, dating to December 1980, and the recent trial of Richard Hirschfield.

The steadfastness demonstrated over 32 years contributed greatly to this case finally reaching a court of justice and a conclusion. We are most appreciative that The Enterprise made this case a priority.

Reporter Lauren Keene repeatedly demonstrated her journalistic skills, humanistic awareness and devotion to details while tackling the larger issues of complicated situations. Her powerful, persuasive writing skills treated each topic perfectly, from capturing the case’s long history to describing sensitive issues in a respectful, compassionate manner. Each lead paragraph was compelling and finely crafted with the initial sentence immediately pulling the reader into the situation.

All of this Lauren accomplished while covering many crimes and cases in Yolo County and federal court. She was nearly always present for each long, often tedious court session, and showed great respect for all parties.

Impressive also, was the respect and collegiality shown between Lauren and her fellow Sacramento reporter. Both were faithful to the issues and provided fair, accurate coverage of the essential points.

Our deepest thanks to The Enterprise and Lauren Keene for providing comprehensive, balanced reporting on all matters important to our greater community.
