On Wednesday morning, I listened to Chancellor Linda Katehi talk with students on the Quad. She reiterated her horror over Friday’s incidents, told them about an upcoming meeting with the regents and Assembly Speaker John Peréz and urged them to attend, repeated her support for the encampment so long as it was safe and sanitary, noted that more porta-potties were needed, and offered water and sandwiches.
She handled the hecklers respectfully, and took comments and requests seriously.
I don’t know how the needs of all of us will be balanced with the power of the few. I do know, though, that I could not have imagined a better response on the part of this chancellor. I hope her conciliatory approach will continue. I hope it will be expanded and built upon, and that the 99 percent and this chancellor are able to reinvent the kind of democracy we need here in America.
