Hurray for yard waste bins!

By
From page A6 | January 22, 2014 |

I applaud the city for finally considering yard waste bins. We have lived in several cities that used them and they keep the streets looking much cleaner and neater versus the current neglected, dumpy look many Davis streets now sport.

My mother lives in San Jose, which has the same practice as Davis and it, too, looks bad, but Davis seems to have more piles of debris on the streets seven days a week. It irks me that some of our neighbors put out huge piles of debris on Fridays or Saturdays so they can sit there (or blow all over the streets) for five days before pickup.

And then there are the genius Davisites who just love to throw their dog’s excrement decked out in colorful plastic bags into the piles. The piles not only are an eyesore, but block both bike lanes and parking access.

Yes, you may have to cut up some of your clippings or have a couple of extra cans in your side yard to hold excess for a week or so (God forbid!). We ourselves do a lot of yard work and look forward to the prospect of having cleaner and clearer streets for all Davis citizens and guests to enjoy.
