I didn’t know I was an oppressor

By March 7, 2011

Oh, the anguish!

Here I thought I was just an old, white Protestant woman. Now, thanks to Bob Dunning’s exposé of the “white privilege workshop” presented as part of Principles of Community Week at my old alma mater, I find I am just a mean-spirited old oppressor.

Should I not have been instrumental in hiring the first person of color as a supervisor for my longtime former employer?

Should I not have started renting property to families of Mexican descent more than 22 years ago?

Should I not have contributed  for nearly 50 years to the support of Christian missionaries, fellow classmen at UCD, who have spent their entire professional lives improving the lot of unschooled natives in the jungles of Colombia?

Just let me declare, in my own defense, that I do not kick puppies, kittens or other senior citizens. But keep that workshop inventor out of my way, or I might suffer a “senior moment.”
