Sellers at the Wednesday afternoon Davis Farmers Market will not keep the respect and loyalty of customers who wait all week to buy their fresh produce if they fold up their tables, pack up their fruit and vegetables, and leave the premises 35 and even 45 minutes before the clearly stated market closing time, 6 p.m.
Stores such as Nugget and Save-Mart always follow their posted hours. One never arrives to find any of them “closed early because business was light,” ever, or especially, on some evenings when it plainly is. These stores know that their customers have diverse food needs and preferences and often complex daily schedules, and that those customers depend upon provisions and supplies being available when the stores say they will be. Their deli and meat departments do the same. And these food stores are open every day, whereas the Farmers Market operates only a few limited hours two days a week!
Business is business, folks, and respect earns respect.
