“But it is my contention that people without guns would kill far fewer people.” I would add to Greg’s point my own contention that ‘people who are suffering from a serious psychiatric malady without guns would kill far fewer people and would successfully commit suicide less often.’ If you look at the background check system we have in place, which most gun sellers are required to check before selling a gun, almost no one who has a severe psychiatric disease and is under the treatment of a psychiatrist will show up on the federal list and thus such people will be able to legally buy firearms. This is the result of the NRA and the ACLU working for their own concerns and against the public interest. We ought to make it much harder for someone who has serious psychiatric problems to buy a gun. We also need to get rid of the loopholes which allow some sellers to do no background checks on buyers at all.
