I like to ride my bike out to the Pedrick Road farm stall via Old Davis and Tremont roads, and I have been appalled at the amount of trash along the sides of the road. I decided to clean it up and have achieved cleanup on both sides most of the way. (If not me, then who?)
A rough analysis of the trash is about 40 percent fast food and coffee packaging; about 40 percent alcohol cans, bottles and packaging along with cigarette packets (so many of those!); and about 20 percent miscellaneous stuff.
It occurred to me that it may be a good idea if all the liquor stores and fast-food establishments in town would voluntarily contribute a small sum per month (say $50) to a fund that could be used to clean up around all the roads surrounding Davis. I am thinking it may be possible that the money is just used to pay for the supervision of orange-vest people working off community service obligations for their DUIs.
I cannot do the whole county by myself … It would be great PR for all the businesses who contribute and it would help keep America beautiful. What do you think?
I would also like to encourage others to take their bike wagons, get a “nifty nabber” grabber from Home Depot and some bags, and get out there and help me. When you complete a mile-long stretch it gives you a great feeling of satisfaction, and some good exercise to boot.
I am not looking for a medal, but it would be nice …
