As a Davis resident since 1984 and a staunch supporter of the Davis Downtown Business Association’s efforts to revitalize downtown Davis, I feel compelled to respond to a recent letter to the editor in which the writer questioned the location for the proposed Third, Fourth, E and F streets parking and redevelopment project.
Edith Vermeij says she is “mystified” as to how replacing the Third, Fourth, E and F streets parking lot with a garage would help the DDBA’s cause and suggests that the Amtrak parking lot would be a better location.
Well, the choice of location for the proposed project is really not a mystery at all. The Amtrak lot is not a viable option because it would be irresponsible to spend community money on a parking garage that would mainly be used by Bay Area commuters from other cities. It is not centrally located and, most importantly, this project is not just about building a parking garage — it’s about redevelopment and revitalization.
We need to support the Third, Fourth, E and F streets retail and parking project as a positive step toward creating a vibrant and user friendly urban center. Let’s keep our downtown alive!
