As the chapter chair of the UC Davis California Public Interest Research Group chapter, the student group pushing for a plastic bag ban in Davis, I am thrilled to see the support of the Natural Resources Commission in its recommendation of the plastic bag ban here in Davis.
The billions of plastic bags used by Californians every year are degrading our waterways, threatening human health and jeopardizing California’s economy.
Not only does the Natural Resources Commission get my support, but more importantly, it is also receiving the support of the thousands of UC Davis students who have already voiced their support of a citywide plastic bag ban. In three months alone, 4,400 Aggies signed on to petitions urging the City Council to protect our waterways by banning single-use plastic bags
Commission Chairman Dean Newberry hit the nail on the head — “There’s a big disconnect in (a plastic bag’s) utility versus its life.” Nothing that we use for five minutes should last hundreds of years.
Whether you’re motivated by protecting the Pacific Ocean, by keeping Putah Creek clean and plastic-free, or by saving the city of Davis some money, by banning plastic bags we can make a serious difference.
The time to take action is now. It’s time for Davis to step up and join the 16 cities across the state that have already taken action to improve California by banning plastic bags. City Council, you have thousands standing behind you — let’s make Davis a cleaner, greener place to live.
