I was driving early Friday when I first heard the news of a school shooting in Connecticut. The initial report said three were killed. Then reports that children were involved; then that these were kindergartners only 5 or 6 years old. Finally, the horrifying reports of what had happened. The feeling I felt was sheer sadness. Then anger, that another national tragedy had befallen our country and gun violence was the cause. The school shooting in Newtown is tragic beyond words.
After similar tragedies in Tucson, Ariz., and Aurora, Colo., groups like the National Rifle Association told us this is not the time to talk about gun violence and gun control. They are wrong! Now is the time is to discuss controlling assault weapons, closing gun show loopholes, restricting high-capacity magazines and requiring national background checks for those purchasing a gun.
President Obama and our congressional representatives must show the courage and leadership to take on the NRA and gun lobby. The time is now to pass sensible gun laws. If not now, when? After the next mass shooting?
