Over the past 17 years of watching Davis school board meetings, what I look for in a candidate has evolved considerably. Seventeen years ago, I would have voted for the candidate(s) with the most experience and whose views on issues aligned most closely with mine.
Now, I look for candidates who approach decisions with respect for all perspectives, while retaining a core commitment to making decisions based on data, experience and recommendations of trained professionals. I want a candidate who maintains the integrity of the decision-making process at all levels.
In other words, I prefer a decision well-made with which I disagree, over an action imprudently taken just to appease a group of vocal parents even if I am one of those parents. Barbara Archer is such a candidate.
Yes, she has years of volunteer experience with the school district; yes, she is a skilled communications professional; but most importantly, Barbara is committed to making careful decisions, considering the views of all, respecting the role of district staff, while maintaining a constant focus on providing an appropriate, excellent education for every student in Davis.
I encourage voters to join me in supporting Barbara.
