The following is a copy of a letter to President Obama:
Like you, I am seriously concerned about climate change; evidence shows that global warming correlates with the greenhouse gases we create, and I feel it is the single largest threat facing our human civilization. I appreciate the talk you gave June 25, pledging to do as much as you can to help the environment, given the lack of support in Congress. We need a worldwide environmental “Marshall Plan” to address climate change, if we have any chance of preventing environmental chaos.
Could I ask one more thing? Please, please, please do not allow the Keystone pipeline to go ahead. It is dirty fuel, with great opportunity for accidents, and we need to put our attention and funding into the alternative energy sources of the future.
I understand the forces that want Keystone, but if you take a stand and deny it, you will become the environmental hero of the decade. I think a majority of the American people are beginning to understand the risks of climate change, and will support you. The corporate moneyed interests and most Republicans won’t support you, of course, but I think they are short-sighted, and concerned about immediate profits over long-term environmental and economic survival.
Ultimately, it’s the right thing to do. It will take enormous courage and insight, but you have those. I, and the rest of the world, will be forever grateful.
