The article by Vivian Yee of the New York Times about GATE education had some national trend analysis, and some New York specific statistics. But comparing Davis and California to New York really doesn’t make sense.
In New York public schools at the elementary level starting at kindergarten, there are salaried music specialists, art specialists, P.E. specialists and science specialists in most classrooms. New York teachers are not required to do the amount of yard duty supervision as California teachers. The classroom teacher has time to prepare for differentiation and individualized instruction. Not so, sadly, in California or in Davis.
