Two candidates are running for Yolo County superintendent of schools. It is interesting that not all counties elect this position and it is also important to note that it is a nonpartisan position. That said, voters should look at the actual experience and education of the candidates.
Sam Neustadt is the only candidate with the background, experience and education who can walk in on day one and do this job. It is a critical position for the children of Yolo County, especially those with special needs — whether they are instructional, medical, developmental or behavioral.
Sam has worked in the K-12 school system as a teacher and principal and for the past 14 years as an assistant superintendent working directly with programs that are provided by county offices. He knows schools, students and the services the office of education provides and knows how to make them the best in the state.
It surprised me to read in The Davis Enterprise that an interview panel of CTA teacher representatives is supporting the other candidate who, according to his résumé, has no K-12 experience in the classroom or as a supervising administrator. While school board service is important, it cannot replace direct K-12 experience. Teaching in a college system is not comparable to being a K-12 school administrator who must supervise staff and be responsible for a multimillion-dollar budget. The opponent has worked without a K-12 school administrative credential for nearly 20 years and only activated it recently to run for this position, which demonstrates that his experience in K-12 education is limited.
Sam has worked tirelessly for K-12 students his entire career. This is a hands-on position, not just a figurehead, and Sam’s résumé demonstrates his ability to get the job done and ensure that our children have their needs met.
