New columnists please

By
From page A8 | August 29, 2013 |

We just read the Sunday, Aug. 25, Enterprise, as we always do, and were disturbed to read the columns that continue the ongoing criticism of Aggie football (Bob Dunning) and the disparagement of students coming to Davis (Debra DeAngelo).

First of all, who cares if Dunning can’t bring his Subway sandwich into the stadium? The experience of Aggie football transcends his sandwich but his trivial complaints color and dominate his criticism of Aggie football, which has no basis.

But, DeAngelo is the worst. She lives in Winters — not Davis — and decries the transgressions of students that arrive in Davis every year.

We remind her, it is the annual influx of students that keep Davis such a vibrant and lively community – even if they do ride their bikes down Fifth Street or text their parents while sitting at the Fuji sushi bar. Who cares? They make Davis what Davis is and why we all choose to live here.

The culture and quality of life in Davis is deep-seeded in the university and its students. The university relationship with the community should be celebrated, not denigrated.

Enterprise, get some new columnists who are not so grumpy.

Kristen and Alan Bennett
Davis

It would appear that the Bennetts believe that Aggie football is the cat's pajamas and that students are all angels. Their comments are the prime example of the psychological phenomenon called denial! As for the subway sandwich comment, the fans should be able to bring anything they please to eat during the game as the stadium food is vile. The prohibition is nothing more that protecting a monopoly to enrich the pockets of the bad food purveyors. Who owns the stadium anyhow? Is there no public money involved? Has freedom of choice go to hell in the police state? Maybe the Bennetts would like the columnists to be pepper sprayed!

Wow... I'm the worst because I live in *GASP * WINTERS??? I believe you just proved one of my sub-points. (By the way... I'm a UCD alumni. I've spent a lot of time in Davis, and, moreover, currently spend a LOT of money there.) As for disparaging the returning students, it couldn't be further from the truth. I am disparaging only those who don't know how to behave in a restaurant or grocery store, and who haven't learned what most kindergarteners know - look both ways before you cross AND ("and" being the key point here) if the car doesn't stop, do not step out if front of it!
