The Davis Schools Foundation’s support for Measure A comes from both heart and mind.
Our hearts compel us to act so that next year’s students have the same educational opportunities that current students enjoy. We cringe when we think of a first-grader who can’t get quite enough one-on-one help with reading. We shudder when we think of a seventh-grader who must choose between music or a world language. We grimace when we hear of jam-packed high school classes in core subjects.
Our minds grasp this: Next year the state will not provide adequate funding to preserve our outstanding educational programs. Our school district has trimmed fat to the bone. Still, it will be $3 million short of what’s needed to educate roughly the same number of students as this year. Painful cuts will be made. That’s not a scare tactic; it’s the truth.
The $3 million that Measure A will generate for next year and 2012-13 will sustain excellence in our schools. Please join us in voting yes on Measure A.
