No support for militarization

By From page A10 | August 22, 2014

So Davis has gotten a free $650,000 military vehicle from the Department of Defense for our municipal Police Department. I was not aware that Davis police needed protection from mines or ambushes. These dangers exist in Davis?

Isn’t this the Police Department that has cops on bikes? Do we really need these vehicles for breaking up out-of-control Picnic Day parties? Imagine this vehicle rolling up Anderson on a Saturday night at 2 a.m. to quiet a party down. That’ll be really effective.

Seriously, before the city of Davis commits itself to this vehicle, let’s consider our municipal needs, the reactions this kind of military equipment provokes, as well as the horrendous maintenance costs of these machines.

Where is the money going to come from to maintain this vehicle? That will be an interesting budget item. I have always voted for the extra parcel taxes and measures to fund our city services, but that stops today. I am not supporting the militarization of our Police Department.
