Various writers commenting on Measure A have weighed in on the senior exemption and the inequity of the assessment for property owners compared to renters. But there is a far more serious problem.
Is there another major area of public policy that is more screwed up, and more completely the fault of one ideological side, than government-run education? Which party do the teacher unions support overwhelmingly with contributions? What is the political outlook of most of the worthies occupying seats on the school board? Which party claims it “cares” more about education and demagogues any attempt by the other party to reform it?
The answer to all of these questions is the Democratic Party. The teachers and school board have been able to get away with this stuff for years now. It is simply wrong that a single political party should dominate the funding and management of education in Davis, or anywhere else for that matter. And, yes, it would be equally egregious if it were Republicans running the show.
We should end the charade of a nonpartisan, elected school board and instead require candidates to declare a political affiliation when they stand for election. This would be more honest than what is going on now. Also, it is time to discard the idea that the League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization. The recent forum on Measure A suggests there is nothing nonpartisan about it.
