Our City Council got it right

By From page A10 | October 11, 2013

The Davis City Council should be commended for its informed 4-1 vote to not fluoridate our drinking water. The process that Mayor Joe Krovoza and the council established to hear proponents and opponents was transparent, deliberate and fair.

I talked to one City Council member after the vote at the Farmers Market and he had spent a substantial amount of time researching the science and macro-issues of fluoridation. He ultimately voted no based on careful analysis, not expedient politics.

When the Sacramento Bee wrote that the council “took the easy way out” and that politics had trumped public health, I thought about our civilized friends overseas: 98 percent of Western Europe and all of Japan have opted to not drink fluoridated water.

In view of the totality of data and facts, the four members of the Davis City Council got it right.
