We would like to thank families in the Warmington homes development, Pioneer Elementary School parents and all others who helped us with our Pioneer Book Swap and Sale by donating their own books.
At 1:30 on May 11, kids, accompanied by their parents, flooded into the MPR front doors with old books in hand hoping to get new ones. Those who didn’t swap books could buy them for less than a dollar.
The purpose of this event was to promote children’s reading by providing them with new material to read over the summer. Through donations and sales during this event, we were able to collect more than $300 in donations. These donations will go directly to the Upendo Children’s Orphanage in Nyeri, Kenya, so children there can get books and other materials of their own.
We owe a special thanks to our volunteers who provided much-needed help during the event. These volunteers were completely composed of Pioneer Elementary students who gave up some of their own time to help those in need.
Cody Fore, Owen Musgrove, Nate Soeth, Ayush Malik, Zach Aldaz and Derek Lerman were among those who, once hearing an announcement for more volunteers, joined us just before the event began and were extremely helpful and polite.
One student who deserves special recognition is Cody Fore, who helped us from the planning of the event through the day of the event. Cody is a sixth-grade student attending Pioneer Elementary who took this volunteer service to heart. We and the children at the orphanage appreciate your generosity. Thanks again!
