Praying for victim and suspect
The members of Davis United Methodist Church are in prayer for Mikey Partida, the young man beaten so badly on March 10. We believe that this should not happen to anyone, for any reason.
We are also sorrowfully aware that, all too often, the Christian tradition (including elements of our United Methodist denomination) has communicated messages that contribute to hateful and/or discriminatory attitudes and actions. As a result, our congregation works tirelessly to promote unconditional love and to build a community that is intentionally inclusive of all people, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
We voted more than 15 years ago to nonviolently reject the discriminatory stances of our denomination and follow Jesus’ example by making room in our church to fully include all people. This incident reminds us to redouble our efforts to reach out and welcome all people, and to work for a more accepting Christian church.
We will pray for healing for Mikey and his family. We also pray for Clayton Daniel Garzon, that he may understand the pain he has caused and will ask forgiveness from the Partida family. We pray that our world might better reflect God’s grace, and not hatred.
